The Transnational Americas Research Cluster Presents Cristina Ibarra

Cristina Ibarra is a Chicana filmmaker who has been making award-winning independent films that explore the US-Mexico border for the past fourteen years. She was raised in El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Her documentary Las Marthas premiered on Independent Lens. The New York Times calls it a "striking alternative portrait of border life." Her PBS documentary The Last Conquistador had a national broadcast on P.O.VDirty Laundry: A Homemade Telenovela, her first short fiction, won multiple awards at festivals, including Best Short Fiction, the Audience Award, and the Jury Award, and was broadcast nationwide on PBS. Since then, Ibarra has created short interstitials for the New York International Latino Film Festival, Latino Public Broadcasting and with the Latina interdisciplinary collective fulana.org.

She will also make a presentation on Thursday, November 5, 2015 from 9:30am to 10:45am in the Collaborative Teaching & Learning Building, Room 300.

The talk is sponsored by American Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute.
